The book explores the concept of cognitive dissonance, the psychological discomfort experienced when holding conflicting beliefs, and how individuals within the cult adjusted their beliefs to reduce this dissonance. The study centered on a group called the \"Seekers,\" led by Dorothy Martin, who believed a great flood would destroy the world, but they would be saved by flying saucers.
